Big expressive face, a single readable focal point, in-game character or weapon as anchor, and bright saturated colors that pop on a busy mobile feed. Numbers and short power-words ('INSANE', 'NEW') help, but only on top of a clean composition.

Both work. Faces drive emotional CTR but pure gameplay thumbnails (e.g. clean Minecraft builds, raw Valorant ace clips) outperform when the visual itself is the story. Test both — most channels eventually settle on a hybrid.

If you can't read it on a 200px-wide phone preview, it's too small. Most viral gaming thumbnails use 4–8 words max, in a heavy sans-serif, with a colored stroke or drop shadow for legibility against the gameplay backdrop.

Templates speed up production, but the best gaming channels evolve a recognizable visual brand rather than reusing a stock template. Use a template as scaffolding, then customize the focal art per video.
